It was published in 2011 and is set in Bangladesh during the period of military dictatorship in the 1980s. it follows the story of a family, who are struggling to come to terms with the aftermath of the country's war for independence and the changes brought about by the military government.

"The Lowland" is a novel by Jhumpa Lahiri that tells the story of two brothers from Calcutta, India who take very different paths in life. One becomes involved in political activism, while the other pursues a more traditional path, but their lives become intertwined in unexpected ways.

The term "floating world" refers to the pleasure-seeking culture of Japan in the years leading up to World War II, a world that was seen as fleeting and ephemeral. and the shallowness of the people and their art during such a critical situation.
